How It Works

This tool estimates watering frequency and depth by combining several environmental and plant-specific factors into a simple schedule.

Base Water Needs

Each plant type has a base watering frequency (days between watering) and a target water depth per session. These values represent ideal conditions in temperate loamy soil.

Base Frequency = Plant-specific interval (days)

Climate Adjustment

Hot, dry climates increase evaporation and plant transpiration, requiring more frequent watering. Cool, humid climates reduce the need.

Climate Factor: Arid ×0.5 | Temperate ×1.0 | Tropical ×1.4

Soil Adjustment

Sandy soils drain quickly and need more frequent watering, while clay soils retain moisture longer. Loamy soil serves as the baseline.

Soil Factor: Sandy ×0.7 | Loamy ×1.0 | Clay ×1.3

Seasonal Adjustment

Summer heat increases water demand significantly, while winter dormancy reduces it. Spring and fall are moderate.

Season Factor: Summer ×0.7 | Spring ×1.0 | Fall ×1.1 | Winter ×1.5

Final Calculation

All factors are multiplied together to adjust the base frequency. Container plants, sun exposure, and mulch presence provide additional modifications.

Adjusted Interval = Base × Climate × Soil × Season × Container × Sun × Mulch

Tips for Efficient Watering

When to Water

  • Water early morning (6–10 AM) to reduce evaporation
  • Avoid watering in midday heat
  • Evening watering can promote fungal disease
  • Check soil moisture 1–2 inches deep before watering
  • Adjust schedule after rainfall events

How to Water

  • Water at the base of plants, not on foliage
  • Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep roots
  • Use mulch (2–3 inches) to reduce evaporation by 25–50%
  • Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses for efficiency
  • Group plants with similar water needs together
